I've Registered, Now What and FAQ

Now that your player is registered (Fall 2017)

What’s Davis AYSO doing?
Immediately after the last registration date we begin the process of determining the approximate number of teams for the upcoming season and finding head and assistant coaches for all the teams.

When do the coaches get their teams?
Coaches should expect to receive their team rosters in late August.  Coaches must be Safe Haven and Concussion Training certified and have a valid Volunteer Application Form verified before any roster can be released.  Coach training will take place in July and August.

When do the players get contacted?
Coaches can start to contacting players the day after the first coaches meeting after obtaining their roster.  Coaches meetings will be in late August/Early September with enough time for teams to be able to practice before the first game (September 9).  Your coach will give you all the information you will need regarding practice times and location. Each coach sets his/her own practice days, time and location. Practice fields are located throughout Davis.

It’s after September 5 and my child has not been contacted by the coach. What do I do?

Please do not panic if you see teams practicing and your child has not been called. Not all teams begin practice at the same time. The very young teams, in particular, do not always begin practice until shortly before the first game. If your child has not been called by September 5, please email the registrar at registrar@davisayso.org.

What else does my child need?
Your player will need shoes, shin guards, and a water bottle. Uniforms, including shorts, shirt and socks are provided at the 1st practice.

PLEASE NOTE: players may not wear jewelry while practicing or during games. Please plan accordingly if your player plans on piercing their ears. Earrings must be taken out during practice or game play.

How often are practices and games?

Fall Season practices are held twice a week (field and times to be determined by your child’s coach). Games will be on Saturdays with the first game on September 9th. Games and practices will be held throughout Davis. We do our best to form teams based on geographic areas of town, however team balancing takes priority over geography.  U14 teams are grouped north-west and east-south. U16 and U19 teams are not formed by location.

Refund?
Please see our Refund Request Page for instructions.

Please Remember…..
AYSO is a parent-based volunteer organization established to provide a positive experience for our children. Go to the games. Learn the rules. Above all, be tolerant of the children’s, coaches and referees’ mistakes and weaknesses.

We need Coaches and other volunteers!
Our ability to offer a Fall Season is based on having enough head and assistant coaches for all the teams, referees for all the games and a host of other volunteers to make the program run.  If we don’t have coaches we have to turn players away and refund their registration fees. Please help us provide a positive soccer experience for Davis kids and volunteer to coach or assist today!  No soccer experience?  No problem!  We provide all the training you need!

More Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can my child be on the same team as her/his friend?
A: Yes, if each child has a parent who signs up to coach together the kids will be placed on the same team.  We are unable to accommodate friend requests that are not accompanied by a coaching pair.  Although many parents are concerned about their child being comfortable on a team without any of their friends, it’s a great way for kids to expand their friendships and develop new ones that come with bonding over striving for a common goal.  We have found that even shy kids become comfortable on their teams.  Remember, your child won’t be the only one on the team who doesn’t know anyone at the first practice!

Q: My player had a great season last year with her Coach.  Can she be placed on that coach’s team this year?
A: Yes, if one of you sign up to coach with last year’s coach your child can be placed on that team.  We are unable to accommodate coach requests unless the parents coach together. In accordance with our Balanced Teams philosophy, each season we form new teams as evenly balanced as possible because it's more fun and a better learning experience when teams of similar ability play. It allows for each player to gain the experience of a wide variety of teammates of different skill levels.

Q: Can my child be placed on a team that practices at a specific location or on a certain day/time?
A: Yes, if you volunteer to coach you get to choose a practice day/time/location that works for your schedule.  Since each coach determines their own training schedule and we do not have this information when forming teams, we are not able to place kids on teams with specific training schedules or locations.

Q: Can my player play up and age division or play down an age division?
A: In 2017 AYSO is changing the age division guidelines to calendar year. This is going to mean unexpected age division changes for many returning players. We will not be granting division changes based only on the division they would have played in under the old guidelines.

AYSO does not allow play down requests except for the most extreme cases of smaller size or sometimes developmental delay. We understand the new age guidelines mean many players changing age divisions from what they expected they would be playing this coming fall. In some cases players are now on the younger side of the division instead of the older side or vice versa. However, the age divisions still span the same period of time (one year for lower ages and two years for 10U up to 14U) and so your player will still be playing with kids pretty much in the same age range as before.  The division names are throwing some parents (example - my 7 year old who turns 8 late this year is in the "10 and under - 10U" division???), but these are the division designations defined by AYSO and they are correctly capturing the right group of kids.

In every season we have new players, returning players, players with strong skills for their age and those with more developing skills for their age. Three of AYSO's core philosophies are Balanced Teams, Everyone Plays and Player Development. Those two philosophies mean that we strive to put together teams that have a variety of skills and experience and that all of those players will have the opportunity to play and develop.

So we ask that you give the new age guidelines a chance. Our coaches will be reminded that the ages have shifted somewhat. Also be aware that game rules and field sizes are shifting as well to address age appropriate player development.

We generally do not approve requests for players to play in an age group older than their own.  We do not allow players to play down an age division. If however, you wish to submit a play up request, please e-mail the Player Evaluation Committee at playuprequest@davisayso.org.  Please include your player's name, AYSO ID#, divisions wishing to move from and to, and previous coach name and contact information.  In addition, please provide specific information on why you are requesting the play up.  We will contact your player's previous coach for an evaluation regarding the appropriateness of their soccer skills for the requested division, and we may request an on-field evaluation of your player. In the event a play up request is approved, it is on a space available basis for the receiving division.
