City of Davis Sustainability Programs

Thanks for participating in the "Bike & Bottle"
Davis AYSO 2008 Fall Season Sustainability Program!

And we are off to another "Bike & Bottle" campaign for fall 2009!

To kick off the program for fall 2009, we have two of our local merchants that are offerring, at a 50% discount, their quality water bottles and water bottle bike mount cages (e.g. Klean Kanteen, Nathan, Camelbak). We are very thankful to Ken's Bike & Ski and Fleet Feet for stepping up again this fall season and offering these quality water bottles.

To see samples of the water bottles, come to any of the fall 2009 registration dates. We will have the 50% off coupons at the registrations; so if your interested, please ask for one of the coupons when you come into one of the walk-in registrations.

Here is what we are recommending for this fall 2009 season:

  • Healthy snacks and making the effort to move away from the pre-packaged store bought snacks. We'll soon post some more information and have some good suggestions we'll be handing out to all the snack coordinator volunteers.

  • Team Green Coordinators will also be receiving information that can help you team work towards more "Green" options during the soccer season. And again the main focus of the campaign is to bike and carry a re-usable water bottle to practices and games. We'll soon have details posted here.

Dear AYSO community:

We appreciate everyone’s participation during this past fall 2008 new Green/Sustainability (titled: Bike & Bottle campaign) program introduction.

We believe there were two very important and positive aspects of the 2008 Bike and Bottle Campaign:

1) Less garbage on the fields improved AYSO’s relationship with the city of Davis and the school district, saves the city & schools money, and means less clean-up for coaches at the end of games and practices.
2) Having children bike to practices & games meant less driving for their parents who saved time and gas.

Feedback we have received thus far indicates that many of you supported and found it to be a valuable addition to the AYSO community. We’ve also received responses that indicate the need to improve and more clearly define the “Green/Sustainability” program. We would like to ask, for those who have yet to provide us with feedback on the program, to either email us directly to: sustain email , with your comments and/or we would appreciate if you could take a few moments to complete our on-line survey: http://168.150.251.32/aysogreen/greensurvey.aspx. To login in and complete the survey, all you will need is your past fall coach’s email address; if you no longer have your coach’s email address we can get that to you if you provide us with the team’s information (e.g. Girls U14 NW1) – simply email this information to: web email

After reviewing all comments and survey answers, we will post the results on the Davis AYSO website’s sustainability page. We will also share this information with the City of Davis and other organizations that may have an interest in our program.

Lastly, to make any program successfully, Davis AYSO would appreciate community members to step forward and volunteer to make this coming fall season a more successful campaign. Below lists various volunteer options. Please review these and if you would like to volunteer and participate, email:   sustain email

Tasks that need a volunteer for a successful 2009 Bike and Bottle Campaign:

1. Need Green Coordinator Chair(s) to run 2009 Bike and Bottle Campaign.

2. Need someone to arrange for 25% off coupons for water bottle from local stores.

3. Need someone to work with the coach administrators (RCA/DCA) to try to make sure that players are placed on neighborhood teams as much as possible. This seems to be an issue for southeast Davis especially (south Davis players are put on Wildhorse teams and visa versa), making it harder to bike to practice. We need people who are really good at knowing Davis addresses. The idea here is to, as a last player team assignment option, is to look at player’s addresses and re-assign accordingly (e.g. swap similar rated players to nearest neighborhood; also including coaches addresses).

4. Need someone to put together Green Packets for each team that would consist of:

  • One city of Davis bike map, so that the Green Coordinator can help team members figure out the safest bike route to practices and games, including knowing where bike overpasses are located;
  • A half sheet of recycled paper explaining the role of the Green Coordinator that would be given to the Green Coordinator at the first practice and read to the team;
  • A half sheet of recycled paper explaining “green” snack choices that would be given to the team snack coordinator;
  • For each team, we will need to solicit for 25% off coupons (for each player on team) for water bottles from local stores. I believe the three bike shops that donated water bottles this year would be very glad to participate in this effort;
  • Instructions for the Green Coordinator on recycled paper about: arranging carpools to out of town games or for rainy days, arranging bike pools for team members, arranging parent/kid bike pools for younger players, helping the snack parent with snack choices, and emailing all team members with the information on the two half sheets of paper (about bottle, bikes, and snack).

5. Need someone that would attend the three Coach meetings at the beginning of the season and make sure that the 2009 Bike and Bottle Campaign is announced and that each coach receives a Green Packet.

6. Need someone to get the email addresses of all fall 2009 team green coordinators and set up a listserve to enhance communication between the Chair(s) of the Bike and Bottle campaign and the Green Coordinators of all teams.

7. If the committee decides to award prizes for the campaign, we will need someone to arrange for prizes ahead of time for team winners for 2009. One prize would be given out at each level for boys and girls (example one prize for U14 girls, one for U14 boys, one for U12 boys, etc.). These prizes would be announced at the beginning of the season. The idea is to solicit for donations/prizes well ahead of the beginning of the season so we can advertize the program and prizes during registration.Need someone to get the prizes to the winning teams.

8. Need someone to do a follow-up survey.

Again, thank you for supporting the “Green” program this year and we hope to continue to build on it, based on your comments and feedback. You are also welcome to send comments to any board members, see contact page, http://davisayso.org/contacts.htm).

Thanks,
Sustainability Coordinator, Kelly Safford

Davis Soccer team in the news, excerpt from the Davis Enterprise (Nov. 18): Every year, thousands of families participate in the Davis AYSO soccer season. At the end of each season, families chip in to buy thank you gifts for the coaches. This year the coaches for the Green Hawks (U14B-SE3 team) decided to do the giving instead of the receiving. Head Coach Ike Njoku along with assistants Quigfu Xiao and Austin Perez insisted that whatever amount was collected in their name be donated to charity. A check for $140 was sent to the Short Term Emergency Aid Committee (aka STEAC), and the players received the gift of being reminded to give back to the community. Another tough end-of-the-season decision is whether to buy trophies or medallions for each player to honor their hard work during the season. Again, a donation to charity was selected. Specially designed mini soccer Red Balls were purchased for each player. The proceeds from the balls will support Right To Play programs in over 20 countries. “Right To Play is an international humanitarian organization that creates healthier and safer lives for children in the most disadvantaged areas of the world by using the power of sport and play for development, health and peace.” Next time your sports team is trying to decide what thank you gift to get your coach or whether to get trophies or medals for the players, think about a donation in their name! After all, who needs more clutter.

Green Coordinators, Coaches and Parents: The Sustainability team has completed reviewing all the practice and game surveys. Winning teams from each division will receive prizes. In most cases prizes were awarded to one girl and boy team divisions (some cases multiple division girls and boys teams). Prizes will be awarded and passed out today and next week during the tournament games. If we miss one of your games, we'll contact the Green Coordinator and Coach to make arrangements to get the team players the prizes. We'll post the results on the Sustainability page soon.

We appreciate all teams and their Green Coordinators and Coaches for making this a successful "Green" season!

We also would appreciate all teams to take the survey (or you can email us) the answers to the survey questions (see below) so that we can learn how better to implement the "Green" for next season. In order to take the survey, use your coach's email as login; and you can simply ignore the questions on bike and water bottle participation.

Important End of Seaon Notes:

We need all practice and game surveys completed and turned in; see the below for details about the survey. If you have yet to email to us your results, for your added convenience we have put up an online survey webpage. All you need to complete the online webpage survey is your email address (must use the one we received at the beginning of the season as your Green Coordinator email; you can also use your team coach's email). If you have login problems with the online survey, it may be that we got your email address incorrect or it is missing from our files; in that case email the sustainability email (listed below) and we will add your email address to the system.

Remember: Green teams across each division with the highest attendances will recieve end-of-season prizes. These will be awarded during one of your tournament games. We will contact the Green Coordinators and Coaches of each winning team. Example prizes: gift certificates for Smoothies; video rentals; Alphabet Moon; Yogurt Shack;Starbucks Coffee; and more!

Thank you!

Coaches and Green Coordinators (program information):

TO GREEN COORDINATOR:

Thank you everyone for volunteering as the green coordinator of your team. Because this is the first year for the Bike and Bottle Campaign, we realize that there has been some confusion. We are sending this email out to help clarify the duties of the green coordinator. Also, we would appreciate any suggestions you have, and news about how things are going.

The basic duties of the green coordinator are:

  • Pass out reusable water bottles to each player on the team. We only have 1600 donated bottles, and there are 2200 kids playing. We decided to not pass them out to U-19 (we assumed most kids already had them), and that should cover most of the other teams. If your team still doesn’t have the bottles, you can email us and we can see if there are any bottles left at the AYSO building.
  • Encourage players to use only reusable water bottles. If they don’t have donated bottles, hopefully they have a different reusable bottle at home to use.
  • Either bring, or ask if a parent has a large thermos to bring cold water to the games on hot days, so that players can refill their water bottles.

Encourage biking and bike pooling. For younger teams where parents are not comfortable with kids biking to practice alone, perhaps a parent volunteer can bike with the group. If biking is not possible, some people may want to set up carpools to practices. In general, we want to brainstorm how to have fewer cars going to games. Prizes will be given at the end of the season to the winning team(s) divided by age groups that:

  • Had the largest percentage of players riding bikes regularly
  • Used their reusable water bottles, and
  • Helped coaches clean up the field after games.

As green coordinator, you will help “judge” your team. Please spot check TWO practices and ONE game, and tally the number of players who rode their bikes, and used reusable water bottles. Then, please send this information back to us. Please give us the results from your team by responding to this email with the numbers filled in, using the sheet at the bottom of this page. We will be passing out prizes for the “greenest teams” of certain age groups. We are still working on getting donations, so we do not know how prizes will be distributed among various age groups; more details forthcoming.

Thank you very much for your efforts. We are very anxious to see what kind of a difference this will make in regards to the automobile traffic and waste generation at AYSO events. Please let us know if you have any questions or news about how things are going.

Prize incentive Tally: (Please fill out and email this back to us when you have the results).

TO SNACK COORDINATOR:

Thank you everyone for volunteering as snack coordinator of your teams. During this AYSO season we hope to generate less waste from snacks. In keeping with this goal, we offer some suggestions. These are only suggestions, and may or may not be able to be followed. However, we know that many are trying to think of ways to eliminate waste, so we hope this is helpful. Some of you already received this memo from your coach at the first meeting, but we were told that many did not receive it, so we decided to resend it, hoping that it might be helpful to some of you.

Many teams, (especially the older kids), have chosen not to have after game snacks, so this might not be relevant to your team. If your team is having snacks, here are some of the guidelines that we are suggesting to eliminate some of the waste generated by snacks. As stated before, players should bring their own bottle of water for the game. One of the easiest and healthiest half-time snacks is fresh fruit.

After the game:

  • DRINKS: We are trying to discourage foiled drinks and drink boxes which create an enormous amount of waste. If you provide drinks for players, consider bringing one container (store bought, or thermos) full of a drink, and pouring it into reusable, non-breakable cups for each player. The players will drink the beverage right then, and return the cup to you so that you may wash and reuse the cup. Another option is to simply fill the players own water bottle.
  • 2. SNACKS: Please consider snacks that are not individually wrapped. This may be store bought or homemade snacks. For example, donuts or cookies may be in one large box, brownies or rice krispie treats in one pan instead of individual packets. Other ideas might be pizza slices, salami and cheese, muffins, chips and bagels. If you are buying pre made food; please consider purchasing foods which are in reusable or recyclable containers; i.e. cardboard, #1 or #2 plastics.

Thank you very much for your efforts. We are very anxious to see what kind of a difference this will make in regards to waste generation at AYSO events. Please let us know if you have any questions, and we would love to hear news about how this is going.
