Age Division Changes
In 2017 AYSO is changing the age division guidelines to calendar year. This is going to mean unexpected age division changes for many returning players. The division is named based on the age of players at the
end
of the membership year. For example "6 and under or 6U" are players that turn 6 in 2018 because the membership year runs from July 2017 to June 2018.
We understand the new age guidelines mean many players changing age divisions from what they expected they would be playing this coming fall. In some cases players are now on the younger side of the division instead of the older side or vice versa. However, the age divisions still span the same period of time (one year for lower ages and two years for 10U up to 14U) and so your player will still be playing with kids pretty much in the same age range as before. The division names are throwing some parents (example - my 7 year old who turns 8 late this year is in the "10 and under - 10U" division???), but these are the division designations defined by AYSO and they are correctly capturing the right group of kids.
In every season we have new players, returning players, players with strong skills for their age and those with more developing skills for their age. Three of AYSO's core philosophies are Balanced Teams, Everyone Plays and Player Development. Those two philosophies mean that we strive to put together teams that have a variety of skills and experience and that all of those players will have the opportunity to play and develop.
So we ask that you give the new age guidelines a chance. Our coaches will be reminded that the ages have shifted somewhat. Also be aware that game rules and field sizes are shifting as well to address age appropriate player development.
