Coaching Your Child in AYSO: A Unique Opportunity
Volunteering to coach your child in AYSO is a family experience that creates lasting memories. Whether you're a soccer veteran or a complete novice, AYSO’s National Coaching Program is designed to help every parent succeed in this rewarding journey.
Age-Appropriate Coaching for Every Skill Level
AYSO’s innovative training is tailored to each age group, ensuring you can create a fun and effective soccer experience at every stage of your child’s development. From introducing the basics of soccer for five-year-olds to more advanced techniques for older children, we guide you step by step, enhancing your child’s motor skills, teamwork, and soccer knowledge.
- U5 (Ages 4-5): Fun, introductory soccer
- U6 & U7: Building on motor skills and coordination
- U10: Developing core techniques
- U12 & beyond: Advanced skills and strategies
This progression ensures that you, as a coach, can always provide age-appropriate training that keeps the game enjoyable and challenging.
The Joy of Coaching Your Own Child
Coaching your own child offers a unique opportunity to spend quality time together, fostering personal growth and valuable life lessons. But the benefits extend beyond your family. As a coach, you become a positive role model for all the children on your team, helping shape their experience on and off the field.
Many AYSO coaches continue coaching even after their own children have moved on, finding immense satisfaction in making a difference in young players' lives.
AYSO’s Positive Coaching Philosophy
Positive Coaching is a core principle of AYSO because of the pivotal role coaches play in children's development. As a coach, you’re not just teaching soccer skills—you’re helping to shape young athletes’ character, confidence, and teamwork. AYSO offers training and materials to help you be an effective coach, regardless of your soccer background. If you're unsure about taking the lead, consider starting as an assistant coach and working alongside an experienced mentor.
Benefits of Small-Sided Games
At AYSO, we believe children under 12 should play small-sided games (fewer than 11 players per team). These games allow young players to get more touches on the ball, develop their skills, and increase their enjoyment of the game. Smaller teams mean more action, more learning opportunities, and more fun for everyone involved!
