VIP Fall 2022- individuals with special needs

The American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) Very Important Player (VIP) program provides a quality soccer experience for children and adults whose physical or mental disabilities prevent them from successful participation on mainstream teams. VIP teams may include individuals with Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, neurodiversity, visual impairments, or other conditions that limit mobility, strength, and/or comprehension.

In the VIP program EVERYONE PLAYS! All individuals with disabilities are welcome, starting at age four. Although the typical AYSO program ends at age 18, for VIP players playing on VIP teams there are no upper age limits. The focus is on participation and fun! VIP coaches are flexible and positive, finding a way for all players to participate as fully as they are able. If you thought your son or daughter could not play soccer, think again! With VIP soccer, dreams become realities.

Fall 2022 VIP season will begin in September and end in October. Parents, please register a family buddy and your player(s) to participate @ VIP Program (

What is "VIP" Soccer?

The American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) Very Important Player (VIP) program provides an inclusive, safe, and fun soccer experience for players with physical or neurodiverse special needs. VIP volunteers are trained to understand the needs and abilities of individual players, providing positive coaching to enhance player experience.

All individuals aged four and older are welcomed to participate.

The VIP experience is shared with players, parents, and volunteers. Creating a trusting environment, where trained volunteers dedicate time and effort to get to know the players and communicate with their parents. Providing guidance tailored to each player to advance physical activity with soccer skills, communicating encouragement and empathy. Players participate according to their needs and abilities, encouraged to engage in play, using the soccer ball as an instrument for physical and mental development. The parents of the players are engaged to observe and encourage the field activities, providing assurances and comfort while extending trust to volunteers with their children.

What is a VIP Buddy?

• The buddy coordinates with the head coach about equipment needs for tailored activities, according to player needs and abilities.
• The buddy provides guidance to players in the field, using verbal and physical directions to encourage field activities.
• The buddy is available to provide physical support according to the needs of the player.
• The buddy monitors players for signs of fatigue, stress, overheating or conditions that compromise their safety.
• The buddy develops a personal relationship with the players, gaining trust and confidence.
• The buddy encourages player initiative while providing guidance and support.
• Davis AYSO provides Community Service credits for its volunteers.
